Sola Fide, Sola Gratia, Sola Scriptura

November 15, 2008

.

Faith Alone… Grace Alone… Scriptures Alone.
.

“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith – and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God. – not by works, so that no one can boast.” – Ephesians 2:8-9
.

This particular verse talks about salvation. At the same time, it helps us be reminded to be humble at all times.
.

There are instances, because of our boastful nature, we tend to equate the amount of what we have done to the guarantee of being saved. Meaning, if I am good and I do all these good works, there is the assurance of salvation. And with our sinful nature, we sometimes think that we are far more superior than anyone else because we have done more good deeds or something of that sort. You boast about the good things you have done.
.

But contrary to human belief, this should not be so.
.

The nature of the world dictates that in order to be promoted and be recognized you have to earn it. You have to work rigorously for it. This may be true when we are talking about worldly things. But we should never assume that this kind of thinking applies in our salvation.
.

Your faith and His grace is what counts as the scripture says.
.

Remember that those who does not believe in Him also do “good works”. There are a number of people who in the eyes of the world place them on a pedestal because most often than not, we only see what our eyes are able see.
.

I am sure we are familiar of the story about Jesus and the two criminals crucified with him. One of the criminals said “”Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom”. Jesus answered him, “I tell you the truth, today you will be with me in paradise.”” – Luke 23:42-43
.

It shows humbleness and great faith coming from that particular person.
.

Keep in mind that that person who uttered those words with faith, acknowledgment, and humbleness was about to die. There was no undoing with regards to what he has done. He was not about to live and start doing good things/works to prove such worth. But his faith was so strong that he repented and through God’s gracefulness, he was promised paradise.
.

Now please, do not make the mistake of interpreting this that doing good works is of no value then.
.

“In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.” – James 2:17
.

How can we say we have such faith when it does not manifest?
.

We cannot claim that we have faith when it does not reflect. At the same time, we cannot claim that we are saved through good works/good deeds alone.
.

Faith and good works should go hand and hand. Neither of them can stand on its own.
.

As His children we are expected to follow His teachings.
.

“For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” – Ephesians 2:10
.
