Panagbenga 2009 (Baguio Flower Festival): Parade of Floats

March 11, 2009

outdoorwednesday

.

My very first Outdoor Wednesday post hosted by Miss Susan of A Southern Day Dreamer 🙂

.

The city has just finished celebrating the month-long Panagbenga (Flower Festival) which is celebrated every year. There were lots of activities and one of them is the Parade of Floats.

.

On that day, representatives from different organizations/establishments compete on who has the most beautiful float. One thing to keep in mind is that the floats should be covered in flowers. Well, whatever the design it should be composed of flowers.

.

Isn’t that just grand? We were able to witness large sculptures out of flowers. And there’s hundreds… thousands of different KINDS and COLORS of flowers!

.

We didn’t actually witnessed the whole parade. The streets/sidewalks were swarming of tourists from different places. We did however went to were all the floats were displayed after the parade later on the day :-).

.

There are lots of people taking pictures as well, I just tried my very best to take the best snapshot I can get.

.

(Note: Everything is covered in flowers. Feel free clicking on the picture for a larger view to really see the flowers used)

.

(Some of the floats I captured)

Perfect gazebo for a garden wedding, yes?

.

.

.

flower-floats-22

A "for your eyes only" hot air balloon 🙂

.

.

.

flower-floats-9

Yup, even Pharoah's cap (what's it called?) is made of flowers.

.

.

.

flower-floats-15

A flower made of flowers. What do you think? 🙂

.

.

.

flower-floats-18

Aaawwww. If only we all help to save the world so that it will remain as beautiful as this.

.

.

.

flower-floats-17

Doesn't this jest makes you smile?

.

.

.

flower-floats-19

Can you see the medicine bottles? If only they smell as good as these ones.

.

.

.

flower-floats-20

Mmmmm coffee. Too large for me though.

.

.

.

flower-floats-4

This came in Third Place. The hotdogs are made of roses. The house? well, lots and lots of flowers 🙂

.

.

.

flower-floats-71

I think this one came second. Just look at those giant flower-donuts.

.

.

.

flower-floats-16

First Place goes to Greenwich Pizza. This was my bet as well. The drum set is all flowers, as is the background "Rocks!". Well EVERYTHING in this float is covered in flowers!

.

Hope you enjoyed looking through them.

.

Happy Outdoor Wednesday!

For other Outdoor Wednesday Posts just click on the logo at the very top or on the sidebar.

There are still lots of “close-up” shots of flowers which I’m reserving for Pink Saturday since most of what I’ve taken are pink 🙂

.=====================================================

.
I’m glad you guys enjoyed the floats and thank you for the wonderful comments.
.
Panagbenga literally means “Season of Blossoming” and it started 14 years ago. Probably 2 or 3 years after the major earthquake struck Baguio City. It is like a way of coping and waking the city up again. That there was still hope right after the disaster. Many establishments and homes just crumbled down. We haven’t tranferred back then but I remember stories from my relatives who already lived here. ‘Twas a really scary moment for them. The Float parade is just one of the many activities.
.
It’s nice to hear comments that it is quite similar from the Rose Parade? Does that mean the floats are just decorated with only roses? These floats we have are assortment of flowers but to have so many floats with just all roses.. Wow! That’ll be a lot, and I mean a lot! It must have been really really beautiful. Say, my birth flower is a rose 🙂
.
There were also street dancing (another day) from different schools and levels (this year we have visiting towns participate as well so thank you to them). Too bad I don’t have pictures. Tendency is residents just stay at home and watch the live coverage while tourists just overflows 🙂 But the floats I have to watch personally 🙂
.
In the opening parade the Philippine Military Academy Band will wear their flowery polos and dance/perform on the street. Funny seeing those future-to-be soldiers standing on their neatly pressed uniforms so straight… so serious and really focused while their band is just having all the fun dancing with the crowd 🙂
.
And then on the last week of the event is the Session Road in Bloom where a portion of the main road will be closed. Then on the very last night – fireworks! 🙂

What beautiful floats! This is similar to our Rose Bowl parade, where everything must be made from flowers or plant material (seeds, etc). I like the band one the best also, but I think that big cup of coffee looks pretty good right about now lol. Thanks for stopping by, yes the bluebonnets do grow right along the road, together with lots of different wildflowers. The display will not be as good this year because we are in a drought, but it really is a sight to behold. Kathy

What a fun post and festival! I love all the flower sculpultures, but it’s a toss up between the hot air balloon and Dunkin Donuts! How cute was that! Thanks so much for sharing this with us. I thoroughly enjoyed going to the flower festival with you!

    Happy Outdoor Wednesday…

    XO,

    Sheila 🙂

Wow, these pictures are from the Philippines? I recognize the SM shoe mart logo, but I’ve never heard the name of the flower float parade. I’m a Filipina and I love, love seeing pictures from my country!

Great photos on your post today! Have a great Wednesday! Thanks for sharing with all of us. 😉

I’m always amazed at the work that goes into these floats and the results that are achieved. Happy OW to you!

  10. March 11, 2009 11:23 pm

Those floats are fabulous! They are very similar to the rose parade done annually in Pasadena, California.

My family almost saw the Rose Parade in Pasadena, California; but we got there too late. Actually, we walked around and got to see each float up close because floats were all parked. So, we didn’t have to crane our necks to see. It is so interesting that the Philipines has the similar event. My favorite float was the one with the Pharoah’s cap. Happy Outdoor Wedneday!

To Everybody: I’m glad you guys enjoyed. These are just a few of a many which sadly I didn’t get to capture.

@ Sheila, CurtissAnn: The Dunkin Donuts would have been my bet also. Oh if only they made those giant cups out of flowers as well like the donuts 🙂 … then maybe….

@Chandy: Hello from the Phils. 🙂 Yes the SM float was a representative here in Baguio. Panagbenga (Baguio Flower Festival) has been doing this month-long event since 1995.

@Joyce: The one with the Pharaoh participated in the parade but didn’t join in the actual competition. It was from Camp John Hay and I think they’ve won many times over the past 14 years they they already belong to the “Hall of Fame”. I’m glad they decided to join in the fun again.

  36. March 13, 2009 3:57 pm

Thank you to the new ones and I’m glad you enjoyed such post.

    ========

@Janie: Thanks. Yes I do love to share wonderful places I’ve been through (though limited 🙂 ). For other Philippine Sceneries you might want to check my post about “Mimbalot Falls” and “The Doctor Fish Is In” (although I only have a picture of the fish spa).

    @Jeanne: Yes, It is touching.

@Jane: Flowers seems to be really abundant during this time in this area so I guess it’s priced lesser compared if it is not the season. And this has been going on for 14 years so participants from different organizations and establishments really prepare for this annual event. 🙂

@Muna: That’s great! I’m sure you’ll have fun as well. Watch out for the crowds! 🙂

  37. March 13, 2009 10:25 pm

What beautiful flowers and beautiful floats. Reminds me of our Tournament of Roses parade each New Years in Pasadena, California. I was fortunate to go there a couple of times many years ago. They are so much prettier in person. Thanks for sharing these lovely pictures with us.
