How Fragile It Is

October 16, 2009

Life . . .
.

How fragile life is if we think about it. But most of the times, it is what is being neglected and taken for granted. We get caught up with the business and richness of the world, and then something like this happen .  .  .
.

During the previous month (I think around July . . . or was it just last month?), two typhoons have passed the country. These past few weeks, the same thing happened. Two typhoons in exactly two weeks. These two stronger than the previous month.
.

Damages were major and lives were taken. In the lowlands, flash floods took over. Here in the highlands, landslides.
.

When the first typhoon came (Ondoy), water rose up to rooftop level in some provinces in the lowlands. The news said it was quite fast. Many people got stranded on top of their roof (the fortunate ones). And then the second typhoon (Pepeng) just left, still, downpours and winds didn’t stop at all.
.

We live in the highlands. Roads were closed (due to landslides). Even then, schedules were prioritized for those traveling to and from here. The three major roads in the mountains have suffered much. This means no supplies can travel through. No fuel can be bought as it is reserved for emergencies and ambulance vehicles, prices in food have gone up, and some establishments were closed due to lack of supplies.
.

Even with this, one can’t help but be thankful.
.

Yes, no electricity and internet and phone connection for the longest time. Yes, it is like living the day like night time as everything is gray – you can  barely see from the rain and fog. Yes, you are afraid of the swaying pine trees nearby and them falling right into your home.
.

But what are these compared to what happened in other parts of the country? Traveling by road is impossible with the water so rubber boats were used. In some, by air was the preference just to reach through.
.

Some people said this was an eye opener. That in times like this whoever and whatever you make makes no difference. When the flood came, it didn’t choose the house it was going to go to. Some celebrities who suffered said riches were nothing and that in the end it was life they were holding unto. And prayer .  .  . yes, prayer.
.

I think this time will be the hardest for the grieving families. When everything has passed and reality has sunk in. Material things can be replaced but love ones –  –  –
.

Life . . .

===============================================

(Thanks Sheila for the prayer and to Claudie and Claudia for the concern. I appreciate it so.

I do believe in prayer too and that God is there – always. It is what makes everything possible. It is what makes us reach for someone who lives far from us or are impossible to go to.

If by chance you happen to come by this blog and read this, will you say a little prayer before you leave too? I ask this not for me but for the families who have lost so much – not for material possessions but more.

When everything has passed, they will need all the strength, hope, guidance to go through their lives. And that with everything, may they never lose faith. All, I believe will be crucial in moving on. – – – But in time.)

Thank You Again!

Li, you have no idea how happy I was to see you posting! I’m so glad you’re okay and that you didn’t get hurt by the storms. I am sorry others did. And yes, I will say a prayer for them and a prayer of thanksgiving, too, that you are fine! This made my day!

    XO,

    Sheila 🙂

Hola amiga , muy lindo tu blog, vengo de Celestiene Marie, y decidí visitarte, un abrazo y bendiciones.

  3. October 17, 2009 1:28 am

You are SO right Li! I’m glad to have you back and that inspite of the tragedies, you are alright.
Only a few years ago, we suffered through hurricanes (Katrina, Gustav, Ike & Rita) that devasted our Gulf Coast here in the states. We are rebounding everyday and what a great feeling that is. But we must never forget the people and loved ones that were lost…it is sad indeed.
Take care sweetie and I hope the rebound is a quick one!!!

    Hi Li,
Life is fragile indeed…so glad you are safe. Can never take anything or anyone for granted, that’s for sure.
    I will say a prayer…
    Great post.

Dear Li, I am so glad to hear from you and know that you are okay. Yes, Life is very fragile and one never knows how fast it can be over. Many prayers for you my friend and all the others who have lost so much.

Please take care and know you are thought of and loved.
    See you again soon.
    Sending a big hug,
    Celestina Marie

Hello Li, your post shows how fragile the world is with mother nature taking lives and causing disasters at any given moment. It could be any of us. Mostly we are not prepared. My prayers are constant for the people who are victims from the tragic toll the typhoons have taken. I am thankful you are doing ok. We have suffered terrible hurricanes when we lived in Florida with the same loss of electricity, water anf lack of food in the stores. The one bad one was Hurricane Andrew. The bad thing about typhoons is they just keep coming.

Thank you for your visit on Weds. post. I don’t know why that flower is called a million dollar bell. My cousin called it that name. She knows more about flowers than I do. lol.

We are in Fl. for th gator football game tomorrow. Fun in the Sun. I won’t be visiting again until Monday.

    Hugs xoxo, Jeanne

hi li, i’m glad you’re ok. hindi ba masyado affected ang lugar nyo?

  9. October 17, 2009 7:19 pm

Li: I am so sorry for your country. You are so correct. My sister’s family traveled all night from New Orleans to Dallas, slow going due to traffic. We watched the next day as Katrina hit and all looked fine. Then the levees broke. They lost almost everything as we watched on TV. Although they were not in danger, it is true that possessions can go so quickly, BUT so can LIFE.

We helped there and know the devastation water leaves behind. I truly hope there are many people to help. We have been and will continue to pray for a safe restoration of services and homes.

  10. October 17, 2009 7:55 pm

It’s so scary to go through these things; I’ve gone through several hurricanes, and we can be quite grateful to God for life and the things that count. I’m thankful that you are well and writing.

Hi Li…I give thanks today that you are writing…thank you for the visit today…sending some hugs over to you!!

Hello Li, you are so right and everything you said was very true. I hope that you are doing well and are alright. I feel so badly for the families and anyone who has to know a time like this. We have no idea what winter will bring to any of us. I hope and pray for the families and your country that you continue to heal. I will pray for all of you, Char

  13. October 18, 2009 12:40 am

Li, I am also glad to see you posting again. What a shock to hear what you have been going through. I can’t imagine the turmoil and the devastation that your area has sustained. I will say prayers that all will be well again, that families will be healed and that things get back to normal soon. Hugs to you sweet Li!

  14. October 18, 2009 12:46 am

Oh Li! I didn’t realize that you lived in this region as well! How terrible for you all. I’m glad you are in a safe place and I hope things continue to improve quickly for you. Sometimes Mother Nature just shows no mercy and you all got hit several times in a row. Thank you for taking the time to visit me today and please take care and be safe!

  15. October 18, 2009 4:31 am

Goodness, Li – I never realised things were so bad there. My thoughts and prayers go to these poor people – I’m just so glad you are safe and well, even if living back in the Dark Ages (literally, it seems).

    All the best!

i just said a prayer for those suffering….may some good come from these trials.

  19. October 21, 2009 9:49 am

How horrible. I will pray for you, your neighbors, and your country. Your right. Life is fragile and nothing really matters in the end except love and friendship. I always used to tell my children that when I was working in the hospital once I had a patient who was a lawyer, one who was homeless, and one who was a priest in a ward on my unit. They were all dressed in the same hospital gown. The one most fortunate was the homeless man. He seemed to have lot’s of visits from people while the others didn’t. I say that man was blessed.

i am glad that you and your family are safe…the light bulb is the cutest thing!!! thanks for stopping over to visit me!!!

  21. October 24, 2009 12:02 am

Oh Li, I’m so glad you are alright and yes life is fragile and we do take advantage. My thoughts and prayers go out to the families that were devastated by the floods. Thank you for reminding us to be thankful. BTW, I love, love the little lightbulb terrarium.

  22. October 24, 2009 10:35 am

Li, I am glad you are ok! I had heard news about the typhoons on BBC but hadn’t put two and two together about where you were! We only think of all the good things, when we lose them. While we have them we are always searching for something else. Sending best wishes your way and to the people in your country. Take care!!

  23. October 24, 2009 10:41 am

Oh Li.. My heart, thoughts, and prayers go out to everyone there. Unfortunately, I am so preoccupied with the process of moving to a new home, that I was not aware of the conditions there, at this time. I am glad to hear you’re o.k., but do take care.
Now, on a lighter (sillier!) note, I can’t help but wonder… If I look really close into that cute little terrarium lightbulb, will I see a “Who”?.. Or perhaps, might I HEAR one? Hmmm… Maybe I’m wrong, and that’s only on snowflakes!! (0; Good to hear from you again, Li!

  24. October 24, 2009 12:50 pm

Oh Li, I am so sorry……my prayers are coming your way! So glad you seem to be okay….please keep us posted. Much love!

  25. October 26, 2009 2:43 am

    LOVE that photo!!!

  26. October 26, 2009 8:58 am

Hi Li, I thought about you and said prayers for you and am glad to see you posting. I can so relate since we live in Florida where I’ve seen first hand the devastation that hurricanes can cause. Mother Nature has a way of reminding us what is truly important. Your post was thoughtful and beautiful ~ xo Joy

Li, I don’t know if you know Debbie (There’s An Angel on My Front Porch) from Pink Saturday, but her daughter Amy died. And there is another blogger named Sherry from Country Wings in Phoenix who is Amy’s aunt, and Heidi of Fairy Wings who is her cousin. They all do Pink Saturdays. Not sure if you knew them from there, but I wanted you to know about it in case you do.

    Love to you…

    XO,

    Sheila 🙂

    Oh my dear friend Li
I just knew something was wrong, I just new it!
I’m so glad your family is ok. I did not realize it was so close to the “highlands”. I’ve missed you. I will also say a prayer for all who have suffered and lost their lives.
This is a strange ,and sometimes harmful world we live in. Keep your loved ones close by, like I know you are.
    Thank you for posting.
I was wondering about the light bulb… now I have my answer.
Sending you big hugs and much love
    Love Claudie

P.S. Do you know I will be seeing Mrs Magpie in March for my birthday? I’m also meeting other girls. I wish you lived closer.

Hi Li. Your from here. So true how life is so fragile. We are just passing . Thank God you are safe. I live in the safest place but sad for others. We keep praying for those affected and displaced. I’m trying to reach out on my own my own little way.

Another typhoon just hit us today and we don’t know yet what damages it caused. We have no electricity for eight hours. Its good that I was able to post earlier.

The image is really stunning! Happy Pink Saturday and have a safe and a great weekend.

Li– what a beautiful tribute, in both posts, to Life. We do take so much for granted, going too fast and with busy-ness. I give thanks that you are safe. We’ve undergone storms in OK, and here in AL the area has been hard hit by hurricanes; we give thanks none this year.
    Blessings,
    CurtissAnn

Li, I just want to say that the picture you used for this post was inspiring. It does remind us how fragile our world is and that we need to take better care of it. I will be praying for you and hoping everybody recovers soon from this latest disaster. I understand that will be very difficult for those who lost loved ones. I am glad you got through the experience OK and I will say a prayer for you and your neighbors. Thanks for your visit.

  37. November 8, 2009 10:19 am

It was so nice to have you come and visit me today on PINK Saturday.
Your post is lovely. I too came to know of Debbie and Amy through a post from someone else which lead me to Debbie. I listened with a warm and saddened heart to Debbie and each day in their life. I could feel such strength and such love and I wished there was something else I could do but pray. Amy Rose is at peace now and her beauty will be remembered by her family and friends in the memories she has created. We will remember the incredible strenth.
I hope that you have a lovely weekend…enjoy..
    Judi
