Pink Saturday: My Little Friend :-)

January 23, 2010

,

The first time I followed a pattern stitch by stitch, I end up with this . . .
,

,

😦 I know, it turned into something even I have no idea what I’m making. Somehow what I created is far from the picture in the pattern. It was a sad moment. Oh well. That is me being horrible at patterns or maybe my stitches were wrong.
,

But one helpful thing I have learned from following it was how to increase stitches to form a somewhat round head. And with that in mind, I tweaked and tweaked, tried something else that I hoped would work and came up with this one . . .
,

,

You can tell from from the top view where I’m going at, yes? πŸ™‚ I’m excited!
,

,

Oh don’t mind the bow. I know it’s a little . . . a lot bigger for this little one LOL I think the length of the bow is the same as her body – but it doesn’t matter, right? πŸ™‚
,

,

Isn’t she a cutie? Am I just being biased?
,

My very first Kokeshi doll! What’s Kokeshi? It is a Japanese wooden doll with a bigger head than the torso and without arms and feet. Mine’s a crocheted version πŸ™‚
,

,

Just how small is she? Well, look below.
,

,

I know she is not perfect. She still has some loose threads on her, her head’s kinda wiggly and tilting (maybe because the bow’s too heavy LOL) and the thread kinda separated from all the undoing of stitches.
,

But that’s ok. I still love her so, even with her imperfections. She made me smile when I finished her and still does πŸ™‚
,

,

She is, again, one of the crochet project’s I have attempted during the Holidays (with the afghan and slipper and a fingerless glove for next Saturday). I’d like to experiment more on these dollies. Maybe make herΒ  a little bigger and her body hollow so I can keep a secret note inside πŸ™‚ Or maybe a key chain or some kind ofΒ  accessory – my, the possibilities!
,

But this weekend, I’m trying to make a friend for her. Hopefully I get to share it with you earlier next week – maybe on Monday or Tuesday πŸ™‚ (It’s not the one standing beside her – that was the “unknown form” from the first picture πŸ™‚ )
,

,

Last week I get to meet Pam of Treasures-n-Textures. I saw her altered book entitled “How To Be Happy” and was so curious as to what was inside. She was so nice to send me the 1st batch of images of what’s inside. Looking forward to the rest. They’re pink too! Maybe she’ll share it on her blog on future Pink Saturdays πŸ™‚ Thanks Pam.

Wow Li! She is so adorable. I love her!!! The weird thing is that this week I was reading an art journaling book that also talked about a Japanese Kokeshi dolls, and I was wondering what they were. Now I know? Does this ever happen to you that the same information finds its way to you from different places?

Thanks so much for the birthday wishes! I am going for a jewelry class on that day, to make myself a necklace. A creative treat that I can make and wear and enjoy.

Oh and I wanted to tell you that I am working on a project (or maybe even projects) for you. I haven’t forgotten!

  6. January 23, 2010 11:17 pm

Li, that doll is absolutely adorable!!! You did a great job, and the bow looks perfect to me. I think it is the perfect size and gives her extra cuteness.

Okay, maybe the other piece can become some sort of very cute animal. A dog, perchance?

    Happy Pink Saturday…

    XO,

    Sheila πŸ™‚

What a wonderful Pink Saturday post! I just β™₯ the fact that each of us shares such a variety of items – that’s one reason why this event is never boring. Always something fun, new, lovely or interesting around the corner.

That little doll is precious! I’d love to make one for my grand-daughter, Rachel.

Thanks for sharing a part of yourself today☺ Cold, gloomy day today but, as always, bright and sunny on the Pink Saturday blogs.

β™«Wishing you sunshine and happiness this weekend!β™«

  13. January 24, 2010 2:51 am

    Hi Li
I actually thought it was a finger puppet. lol
I’ve never heard of a kokeshi doll. I have been hearing an awful lot about “blithe dolls”. Have you heard about these? They have big eyes for japanese dolls. Anyway, your little babe is darling. Your needles must be sooooo small. Your fingers must be small too lol
Not participating today, but came over to say hello. Going to the movies with Randy to see “Somethings gotta give” I need a good laugh, and I hear it’s really really funny.
I will be posting early this week. It’s a long one, get ready.
    Sending hugs
    Love Claudie

  19. January 24, 2010 8:32 pm

Love her! When you showed the tape measure with her I was amazed at how petite she is…adorable!!!! She would be darling as a pin too…I could see her on the lapel of a jacket or on a sweater to enhance her beauty further! Happy Pink Saturday!

  21. January 24, 2010 9:47 pm

She is tooo precious! I am so jealous of those who know how to sew, knit, crochet….I know I could learn but that would just be ANOTHER craft cluttering up my house. So I would rather admire those who do it so well!! She is a cutie!

  22. January 24, 2010 9:54 pm

I can’t imagine doing something that tedious. You’re very talented. Thanks for stopping by my blog and leaving a comment. I appreciate it. Please come visit again soon! Tammy

Li, she is so darn cute! You are not being biased. She really is. Thank you for visiting us and leaving your nice comments. And… yes, you have seen pics of my kitty, Janie before. I love her so much I just cannot help myself! She follows me, insists on riding on my shoulders, climbs in my cupboards (as you remembered) and basically, makes me laugh. Have a wonderful week, Li!

  32. January 25, 2010 9:41 pm

Of all the posts this week, I think I enjoyed this one the most. It was so much fun reading about your adventures in crocheting. I love your kokeshi doll. I think you should sell them on Etsy! I like the size of the bow. It’s part of her charm. Great job! Have a good week. -Terri

  33. January 25, 2010 10:38 pm

Li, your things are so precious! This little doll is just adorable. The little girl in me wants one of those teeny, tiny playthings. Just as sweet as can be πŸ™‚ The funny thing you created is the exact reason why I stay away from crocheting…I can’t get things to turn out like they are supposed to. Happy crocheting….Happy Pink Saturday!

  34. January 26, 2010 3:51 am

Oh, she’s adorable! I love how big her bow is . . . “the only thing that separates us from the animals is our ability to accessorize!” LOL! Really, she is precious.

  35. January 26, 2010 11:02 am

Isn’t that the cutest little doll! I hadn’t seen one like that. Nice to see something new. πŸ™‚

    Hi Li..
This is a belated Pink Saturday post,as I’m trying to get to all the participants this week. I just had to slow down long enough to tell you how much I loved your sweet doll. 37. January 27, 2010 11:23 am

Oh my gosh, that little doll is sooooo cute. No wonder you like her so much. She is so tiny. And your post made me smile with your first attempt. You should see my first attempt at a crocheted pair of fingerless gloves. Boy were they awful. Sorry I’m late posting for Pink Sat. but hope yours was wonderful.

    Blessings,
    Tricia

How cute. But what was the real pattern for? I really like your projects shown in the pictures. You are good enough that you can relax while you crochet. I am not but still enjoy it. Hope to get to finish an afghan started long ago – some day!

Oh my gosh! I have a Kokeshi doll and I never knew it. My dad had to go to South Korea on business back in 1976 and brought me back a doll that is wooden, with a larger head, and no arms or legs! She sits in my studio with me along with another cloth oriental doll that my uncle brought back from Vietnam when he was over there in the late 1960s. Any chance I could commission a doll from you to go with those two I already have adopted? Or perhaps a swap of some sort (if you like my beadwork, that is!) They would make such great sisters!
